My short trip to Japan, aka ‘the land of the rising sun’, was pretty epic as usual. After a wonderful lunch with longtime friends Kiyoko and Seigi Ishiguro in Nagoya, I embarked on a new adventure to Mie, a totally off the radar prefecture that turned out to be a hidden gem. I’m talking revered shrines like the 2,000 year old Ise Jinga, the ancient tradition of the Ama pearl diving ladies, old towns like Oharai-machi, island hopping off the coast of Toba, and those famous “Married Couple Rocks.”
Then, I hit the Nakasendo Trail near Nagano to trek through preserved Samurai towns like Narai and Magome, which were basically the ancient equivalent of the Tokyo-Kyoto highway. The weather was perfect, the walking was plentiful, and the food was the best - Japan, you’re a real treat. Here are some pics to give you a taste of it all – this turned out to be one of the very best visits I have had to my ‘second home.’
